Zambia Merges National Day of Prayer and Christian Heritage Day on December 29
Zambia's National Day of Prayer is taking a new direction, with December 29 set to become the date for a combined national observance that will also recognise the country's Christian heritage.
The change follows consultations between the government and the Church Mother Bodies over the National Day of Prayer, Fasting, Repentance and Reconciliation.
Vice President W.K. Mutale Nalumango announced the development in a statement shared on her Facebook page, confirming that the first commemoration of the merged event will take place on December 29, 2026.
The new arrangement brings together the National Day of Prayer and Christian Heritage Day, incorporating the commemoration of Zambia's declaration as a Christian Nation.
The Church Mother Bodies have adopted a renewed resolution following their engagement with the government. The observance is expected to remain orderly, inclusive and meaningful to citizens.
The church has also called on Zambians to approach the day as an opportunity for prayer and reflection on the country's Christian heritage.
Mrs. Nalumango thanked the Church Mother Bodies for their spiritual guidance and President Hakainde Hichilema for what she described as his continued demonstration of inclusive and consultative leadership.
The National Day of Prayer, Fasting, Repentance and Reconciliation was announced by former President Edgar Lungu on September 18, 2015, during the official opening of Parliament.
With the first merged commemoration set for December 29, 2026, Zambia will now observe prayer and Christian heritage together under one national occasion.
