DEC SUMMONS ARCHBISHOP ALICK BANDA AS CATHOLICS PREPARE FOR SOLIDARITY MASS
At 08:00 on Monday, Catholic faithful will gather at the Cathedral of the Child Jesus for a special Solidarity Mass for Archbishop Dr. Alick Banda.
Two hours later, Archbishop Banda is expected to appear before the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) after being summoned by the agency.
The Archdiocese of Lusaka has called on Catholic clergy, religious and lay faithful to attend the Mass and remain united in prayer as the Archbishop responds to the summons in accordance with the law.
In a statement issued through its Communications Office, the Archdiocese said it had “deep concern and unwavering solidarity” with Archbishop Banda, while also expressing concern for his safety and well being.
“Our Archbishop is not alone. He remains a shepherd surrounded by his flock, and the Church stands firmly with him in prayer, communion and solidarity,” the Archdiocese said.
The Church has urged the faithful to remain calm and steadfast, encouraging prayers for Archbishop Banda’s safety, strength, wisdom and well being.
It has also called for justice, truth and peace to prevail throughout the process.
The Archdiocese further encouraged those who are able to attend the Mass to come together as one family.
“We encourage all the faithful who are able to do so to attend this Mass and stand together as one family. Let us be united in prayer, steadfast in faith, peaceful in spirit, and unwavering in our pursuit of truth,” it said.
The Solidarity Mass will be held under the theme, “Stay here and keep watch with me,” from Matthew 26:38.
Following the Mass, Archbishop Banda is expected to proceed to the DEC at 10:00 hours.
The Archdiocese said it was placing its trust in God and entrusting the Archbishop to God’s providence as he goes through the process.
It has also entrusted Archbishop Banda and the Archdiocese of Lusaka to the maternal intercession of the Blessed Lady and Our Lady of Lusaka, the Mother of the Child Jesus.
