11 Suspects Escape From Lufwanyama Police Station During Power Blackout

Eleven suspects have escaped from lawful custody at Lufwanyama Police Station in Copperbelt Province, including 10 who were facing murder charges.

The escape occurred overnight between Friday, October 30, and Saturday, October 31, 2026, during a power blackout reportedly caused by heavy rains.

According to a report published by News Diggers, the suspects took advantage of the darkness to cut through burglar bars on a rear window of the police cells.

The escape was discovered at approximately 01:10 hours on Saturday by Inspector Gracious Tembo, who was on duty at the station.

Copperbelt Province Police Commissioner Edwin Kaluba confirmed the details of the incident contained in the initial report.

The escape of 11 suspects, particularly those facing serious criminal charges, raises concerns about security at the station and the circumstances that allowed them to leave custody undetected.

Authorities are expected to pursue efforts to locate the escapees and establish the circumstances surrounding the security breach.

As of the initial report, no official list of the escapees or their photographs had been released publicly.
